I'm writing a book

The idea for a book came about following my visits to Porto and my desire to walk the Caminho Português. Of course, the Caminho has something to do with it. But that’s not all. And I don’t want to give too much away just yet. Except perhaps to say that it isn’t autobiographical, even though the plot of the story is very similar to something that happened to me. It all began many years ago with an accident and a dream. And over time, many plots, both big and small, were added.

And at some point a few years ago, I was sitting in Porto by the River Douro, near the Área de observação de aves da Foz. To the left lies the city of Porto. To the right, the river’s mouth where it flows into the Atlantic. In the light of the setting sun, my mind merged with the indescribable atmosphere of the gathering twilight, and from the distant haze in the west, the many small and large plot elements suddenly came together to form a story. One that I simply want to tell. It’s not about writing a bestseller. It will simply be my story in my book. It’s unclear whether it will ever make it onto the page. For that to happen, the story still needs to be finished, checked for logic, corrected and edited. And then perhaps it will be available to read here – at least in excerpts.

But I’ll keep working on it and – if you’d like – I’ll share a few insights with you from time to time about the process of writing a book. I’m no professional. Neither as an author nor as a blogger. But perhaps it might interest one or two of you. And maybe you’d like to write a book yourself?!

Don’t think twice! Just get started! You’ll be surprised!

What does an accident have to do with the book?

Sometimes it’s the less pleasant moments in life that change your life.   Perhaps not straight away. But they stay with you, and sometimes something completely different emerges from the experience...
